J.S.M., author of this esteemed blog has made a bold proclamation that I want to share with all my readers out there.  This is no cheap publicity stunt, this is not a lame con or joke, this is completely on the level, when I say, no I guaran-damn-tee: I will lead my 2008 fantasy football squad to a playoff victory, and if not, I vow to subject myself to one of the three grim consequences I list above.  You have my word.

People may be asking why I would risk any of the above scenarios? The answer is simple.  The greater the risk, the sweeter the reward, and I don’t plan on losing, so to me there is no risk.  I’ve laid down the gauntlet in this game of chance & boldly accept whatever stipulation is imposed.  But this is where you come in.  So confidant am I that my three-year win-less streak will come to an end this December, I’m willing to put it all on the line to make it happen.

In the grand old spirit of democracy I’m giving my readers 10 days to decide my fate if, by chance, I fall short of my bold guarantee (which, of course I won’t).  I want my readers to spread the word, tell your friends, enemies, co-workers, brothers, sisters, parents, uncles, cousins, in-laws, mistresses and so forth to come in & vote every day from now until July 4th, after which point I will post the results right here for the world to see.  When I win, I’ll pour the champaign, if by chance I should lose, then let my fate be sealed.  What is that fate? You can decide.

Make sure to check back 4th of July weekend to see the posted results and I will also post my reaction here, as well to the chosen stipulation hinging on my fantasy fortunes.

Breaking NBA News! Source: Star Tribune

Wolves pick Mayo, swap him for Love in 8-player deal

A dramatic, midnight 8-player deal reshapes the team roster.

Five hours after more than 2,000 draft-party participants cheered the arrival of new Timberwolf O.J. Mayo, their NBA hometown team made a midnight deal that reshaped its roster.

The Wolves dealt Mayo's draft rights along with Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, Greg Buckner and their contracts to Memphis for the rights to Kevin Love, swingman shooter Mike Miller, forward Brian Cardinal and center Jason Collins.

The dramatic deal long after the revelers left the team's Target Center practice facility rids the Wolves of Jaric's bloated contract, Walker's problematic presence and delivers a uniquely skilled 6-9 rookie forward and a deft veteran three-point shooter.

When the Madison Square Garden floodlights finally gleamed and league Commissioner David Stern stepped to the podium Thursday evening, all the predraft posturing and silliness dissipated and the draft unfolded just as expected -- Memphis guard Derrick Rose first to Chicago, Kansas State forward Michael Beasley second to Miami and Mayo third to the Wolves -- without any seismic trades.

That is, until the Wolves delivered the big one long after the draft crowds in New York City and the Target Center basement went home.

Minutes after the Wolves took Mayo, assistant general manager Fred Hoiberg appeared before the draft-party crowd and told the gathered fans how Mayo had not once, but twice “blown away” the team’s seven-man scouting tribunal with an individual, invitation-only workout for five NBA teams and an an hour’s interview with the Wolves on Saturday in Chicago.

One fan in the audience wore a No. 32 USC jersey, Mayo’s jersey.

Twelve years ago, the Wolves drafted Connecticut star Ray Allen and traded him minutes later for Stephon Marbury. Two years ago, they took Brandon Roy and then sent him to Portland for Randy Foye and cash.

Each time, the newest Timberwolves wore team caps while the first round still progressed.

This time, Mayo already presumably was preparing to fly to the Twin Cities for a news conference this afternoon.

When reporters cornered Hoiberg in a crowded elevator as he headed back up to the team’s draft room, one fellow asked if his just-finished speech meant the Wolves were keeping Mayo for posterity.

“This means we’re keeping him,” Hoiberg said.

The Wolves used their two early second-round picks to select Serbia’s Nikola Pekovic, a promising 6-11 European forward who just signed a rich contract with a Greek team and might not play in the NBA for at least three seasons, and Kansas guard Mario Chalmers. They then traded Chalmers to Miami for two future second-round picks and cash.

For weeks, Heat President Pat Riley supposedly explored just about every option other than selecting Beasley, who before Rose burst forth in the NCAA tournament was considered a lock to be the
No. 1 overall pick in this draft. He brought Mayo and Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless to Miami on Tuesday for a second and final “secretive” workout.

Hoiberg said the Wolves’ decision-makers thought there was a “very realistic chance” the Heat would take Mayo and leave Beasley available with the third pick. In an ESPN interview, Riley, who reportedly is concerned about Beasley’s immaturity, said his scouting staff “got me in a room and made sure Mr. Beasley was going to be part of the Miami Heat.”

That left Mayo, who says he set aim for Thursday night when he was 9 years old. That’s when his mother asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up and he opted for “NBA player” over a fireman, policeman or astronaut.

He traveled only to New York, Los Angeles and Miami to work out for the Knicks, Clippers and Heat and declined an invitation to come to Target Center. Those decisions might suggest Mayo, who already has signed a four-year endorsement deal with Nike, wanted to play in a major market, a contention he denied Thursday night.

“I’m totally excited, I’m so happy to be a part of the Minnesota organization,” he said. “I just wanted to hear my name called and be part of the NBA. It didn’t matter if it was a big-market organization, small market, medium market. I just wanted to be a part of the NBA.”

Good thing, because before the night was through he was headed from one small market to another small market while Love, the UCLA freshman forward, was bound for Minnesota and McHale, the Basketball Hall of Fame player after whom Love patterned his game.

Love brings the Wolves a frontcourt complement — a player who can spread the floor with his outside shooting and unique passing skills — to star Al Jefferson’s low-post scoring game.

Miller, 28, is a career 40-percent shooter who also will help the team spread the floor when defenses collapse on Jefferson inside.

In dealing their three current players, the Wolves send away Walker’s $9.3 million salary slot that expires after next season and Jaric’s big contract, which has three seasons and $21.2 million remaining and in return take Cardinal’s two-year, $13 million deal that the Grizzlies have been desperate to trade.

 The Great Debate (Part 1)!

The
Great Debate!

Picture of 91771_24213.jpgLT vs. APPicture of 99768_24213.jpg
What can these players do for you?

According to recent polls made up of our "highly respected" fantasy league members, the results show that Viking's running back, Adrian Peterson has a 20% lead over the fantasy football incumbent, (the Charger's LaDanian Tomlinson) in the race for the #1 spot in this summer's fantasy drafts.

This is a dramatic change from earlier results (April) that once had Tomlinson with a comfortable lead.  Nationally, Tomlinson continues to lead Peterson by about 30% in mock drafts, but the gap is narrowing.

Peterson supporters name "change" as their primary reason for supporting the younger & hipper back, often referred to as "Purple Jesus."  They also claim that Peterson represents the future of the running back position, while L.T. represents the past, beside such names as Holmes, Faulk & Dickerson.

An unidentified Peterson lobbyist was quoted as saying "He simply brings more upside to the table, which is what fantasy football is all about; besides I think Tomlinson is getting too old to lead this fantasy team...I mean he's almost 30."

The Tomlinson supporters argue that while Peterson offers hope & change, LaDanian gives you cold-hard facts & a track record of getting things done.  An L.T. lobbyist said this: "I'm for Tomlinson all the way this August, he's been through the wars, his experience speaks for itself, plus he's not afraid to reach across the aisle and catch some passes as a receiver too & even throw a couple...I mean can Peterson say that?"

The debate rages on, and with two months to go before the fantasy drafts begin across the country, things are sure to shake up along the way.  I will continue to update the polls and follow these developments leading up to the biggest decision of the summer...L. T. or A. P.  Stay tuned.

 Fantasy Vault: Remember when...

Westbrook's heady play was a fantasy stunner

By Adam Rank  |  NFL.com

The following story is from NFL.com's Fantasy Football 2008 Preview magazine, which is currently available on newsstands everywhere, as well as on NFLShop.

Larry Fitzgerald spoke for millions (thousands, anyway) of people in the NFL world when he told Philadelphia running back Brian Westbrook at the 2008 Pro Bowl, "You ruined my fantasy football team."

NFL.com's fantasy preview hits newsstands on June 16, but you can order your copy right now at NFL Shop.

The Cardinals' receiver was one of many people on the wrong side of the NFL's version of "The Play." It was fantasy's answer to Jim Marshall running the wrong way, or Don Beebe chasing down Leon Lett to strip him of a sure touchdown in Super Bowl XXVII. If fantasy football ever had a "Where were you?" moment, this was it. But what was it?

Late in the fourth quarter of a week-15 game at Dallas, with Philadelphia leading by four points, Westbrook took a handoff and broke through the Cowboys' defense. It looked like a certain 25-yard touchdown run. The score would have given the Eagles a 17-6 lead, but the Cowboys would get the ball back. However, if Westbrook didn't cross the plane of the goal line, it would simply give the Eagles a first down and the ability to run out the clock (the Cowboys having already spent their time outs). As fantasy fans began to rejoice (early) with this late score, Eagles fans watched in delight as Westbrook simply fell down on the 1-yard line. His thoughtful, heady, unselfish play let the Eagles run out the clock, and Philadelphia defeated its longtime rivals, 10-6.

Westbrook's fantasy owners, however, wept.

A play like that, at any point of the season, would normally be cause for great discussion -- who is this guy playing for, me or the Eagles? But because it came in week 15 -- a playoff week in many fantasy football leagues -- it was monumental.

For his part, Westbrook was focused on the Eagles gunning for the playoffs (that would be the real NFL playoffs, the ones that count most for NFL teams), but he does admit that the thought of ruining fantasy football teams across the country -- or the globe, even -- did cross his mind when he sat down on the team bus following the game. That just goes to show how deeply ingrained fantasy football has become inside today's NFL.

And in the months following, everybody still wants to talk to him about it.

"Everybody has a different opinion on it," Westbrook said. "If it helped them win, they love it. But if it helped them lose, they hate it. I get guys asking me, 'Why did you have to go and ruin my season?'

"It definitely will be one of those plays that people remember. It helped out a lot of people, but it also hurt a lot of people, too."

Remember, for all the fantasy teams that lost out on 6 points when Westbrook didn't make it into the end zone, there were an equal number of teams that reveled in the moment, a moment that might have turned a playoff loss into a playoff victory.

Westbrook was a star for his owners in 2007. He led the NFL with 2,104 yards from scrimmage and scored 12 touchdowns. But he has been portrayed as a villain by many fantasy owners for his play. Here's a secret, though: He wasn't the mastermind behind the fantasy and real-life game-changer. Eagles tackle Jon Runyan was the one who suggested that Westbrook lie down to eat up more clock. Figure that -- an offensive lineman, normally far away from the football, coming up with the most selfless play imaginable to win a game. On the replay, Runyan can even be seen chasing Westbrook down the field instructing him to hit the turf.

Brian Westbrook probably had no idea how many fantasy players were affected when he intentionally went down at the Dallas 1-yard line at the end of Philadelphia's Week 15 win last season.

"Maybe I wasn't on his [fantasy] team," Westbrook joked. "But no, that's just Jon. He's always coming up with stuff like that. He's a smart guy. He told me that if I break the play [through the defense], I need to go down at the one."

For some, Westbrook will forever be their Scott Norwood. And for others, he's Adam Vinatieri. But no matter which side you were on, Westbrook will always be remembered for "The Play."

Kudos, by the way, to the radio and television announcers sending the news out to fans around the country and back in Philadelphia and Dallas. They didn't "call" the touchdown early and force themselves to issue an instant correction. Instead, they, like many astute fans, recognized the play for what it was. A TV shot a moment later showed Eagles coach Andy Reid giving Westbrook the thumbs up. He backed that up by praising his running back during the postgame press conference.

"It was brilliant," Reid said. "He used that Villanova education and transferred it to the football field."

"I hear people talk about it all the time, but it's always in good fun," Westbrook said. "It was one of those plays that worked out for me. It kept the ball away from them, and we won the game.

"I'm sorry about [fantasy football players], it's just one of those deals. But it is a play that will always be remembered. The next time it happens, I will be known as the guy who started it."

Who should be the 1st player selected in 2008 fantasy drafts?
LaDanian Tomlinson
Adrian Peterson
Someone else.
